Railways plans to set up 1000 MW solar power generation capacity
NEW DELHI: Indian Railways plans to set up 1,000 Megawatt of solar power generation capacity over the next six years in a move aimed at ramping up the share of renewables in its total energy use to 10 per cent.
Indian Railways consumes around 18.2 Billion Units of electricity annually – around 1.8 per cent of the country’s total energy consumption. The latest solar initiative could cost the railways, among the world’s largest rail networks, well over Rs 6,000 crore according to experts.
As part of the railways larger plan -- officially called Indian Railways Solar Mission -- the ministry is also going to install solar panels on the roof top of coaches, according to the railway’s Annual Environment Report 2015-16.
