GAIL at COP21: Natural gas can help combat air pollution
New Delhi. GAIL (India)Limited stressed on the need to increase use of the eco-friendly fuel for power generation and vehicular movement as this can help combat rising levels of air pollution.
Joining energy majors at the COP21 Climate Summit in Paris to highlight the steps by the Indian oil and gas industry to combat climate change, GAIL advocated more production of gas-based power instead of burning coal and increasing city gas distribution networks.
GAIL was one of only three public sector undertakings which presented a paper on the issue at a special event held at the India Pavilion on the sidelines of COP21. The paper highlighted the initiatives taken by the company primarily energy conservation, reducing carbon foot prints, tree plantation and construction of green buildings.
Giving the presentation on behalf of GAIL, Shri Santanu Roy, GM (Corporate Planning) said that to achieve ambitious Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) of India, GAIL has advocated the critical role natural gas can play as a natural ally to renewable sources of energy such as solar energy. He also mentioned about the role natural gas played in preserving the beauty of the Taj Mahal after the nearby industrial area started using the fuel.
