NCL Sets up National Leavel Residential Atheletics Academy for Nurturing Sports

Singrauli: Northern Coalfields Limited, has started a Residential Athletics Academy in its Jayant Opencast Project (OCP). The free ‘Residential Athletics Academy’ aims to produce competent sportsperson for countrywide competitions. Thanks to NCL, Singrauli region has witnessed first of its kind Athletics Academy. This is also the first academy in any Coal India subsidiary to be established to nurture budding athletes.
 
The first batch of athletes comprising of 18 young athletes were inducted in the academy recently in the inauguration ceremony held in Vijay Stadium of Jayant. The academy will not only provide free sports coaching to all the players but also bear all the expenses incurred during the course of training towards the athletes’ lodging, diet, academics, sports kits and medical care. The academy has 20 rooms with double occupancy, one gym room, dining hall, kitchen and reception area. Athletes inducted in the academy were selected from among 200 who participated in the selection trials held locally on knock-out format.
 
In his inaugural address, CMD NCL Shri P.K. Sinha said that through the academy, NCL reiterates its commitment to creating shared value on the social and economic front by nurturing budding sports talent. Labelling discipline as the foundation stone for sports, the Director (Technical/Operations) urged athletes to hone their skills using the infrastructure and facilities provided by NCL. The Director (Technical/Project & Planning) Shri P.M. Prasad mentioned about the extraordinary success achieved by Ms. Nuzhat Masih Parween and expressed hopes that the academy would produce sportsperson who once again would bring NCL the international repute. Ms. Parween, who plays for Indian Women Cricket Team, is the daughter of Shri Masih Alam who is working as Dozer operator at Jayant OCP of NCL.
 
Around 200 youngsters participated in selection trials for induction in the academy. Out of this, 24 trainees were selected and trained for 10 days following which a final selection trial was done in which 18 participants qualified for the induction. The academy is one among various initiatives of NCL for promoting sports in and around Singrauli.
 
NCL, under its CSR scheme Khel Tarang, undertakes various initiatives for promoting sports in adjoining and rural areas. The company also promotes sportsmanship among employees of the company. The company organizes competitions and tournaments. In addition to being played at in-house levels, the company has gone ahead in its endeavours and gone for national accreditation. Kabbadi Tournament and Hockey tournaments are to name few which have been granted national accreditation. 
 
The company also uses sports as a tool to promote industrial relations by organizing competitions between representatives of management captained by the CMD of the company and representatives of trade union captained by trade union leader.
 
It is these constant efforts of NCL to boost sports that company also contributes to state exchequer. In FY 2017-18, the company contributed Rs 25,00,000 to Singrauli District Administration for promoting sports.
