Shri Anil Kumar Jha takes over as Chairman of Coal India

Sambalpur: Shri Anil Kumar Jha, Chairman and Managing Director, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), has assumed the charge of the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of ‘Maharatna’ Coal India Limited, the largest coal miner in the world. He has taken over as 27th Chairman of Coal India.
The President of India had approved the proposal of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for the appointment of Mr Jha, at present the CMD of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, to the post of CMD Coal India till his superannuation i.e. 31 January 2020.
 
 
 
PROFILE: Mr AK Jha -- a CMD with Humane Touch
 
Born on January 25, 1960, at Molanakita in district Godda of Jharkhand state, Mr Anil Kumar Jha is a mining graduate and M. Tech. from renowned Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
 
He started his career with Coal India as Junior Executive (Trainee) at Topa Colliery in Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) in 1983 and joined Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) as CMD on 1st of November 2015. 
 
MCL, the youngest Coal India subsidiary, achieved greater heights under the leadership of Mr Jha, who as CMD successfully steered the company to register growth consecutively in spite of tough operational challenges.
 
Under his command, MCL had recorded its highest ever coal production at 143.06 million tonnes during the year ended on March 31, 2018, which was 2.8 percent up against 139.21 million tonne dry fuel mined during 2016-17.
 
MCL also achieved the distinction of registering the record one-day production of 7,84,344 tonne coal during March this year, breaking its own record of 6.36 lakh tonne production in single day, which was the highest quantity of coal ever produced by a company in the country. 
Mr Jha has a vast experience in coal mining industry with over 35-year-long carer in the fields of mine planning, production, management supervision, direction and control of underground as well as opencast coal mines.
 
An officer having illustrious career in coal industry and popular as a “CMD with Humane Touch” among the coal miners, Mr Jha, before joining MCL had served at many important positions with CCL, Ranchi, Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI), Ranchi before joining MOIL Limited as the Director (Production & Planning) – the Nominated Owner - and Head of Production, Planning, Projects, Quality Control and Mine Safety Divisions and other allied departments, including the Departments of Personnel and Industrial Relations.
 
Appointment of Mr Jha as CMD Coal India has brought waves of happiness among the officers and personnel in MCL. Besides, trade union leaders, political leaders, civil administration, etc. congratulated Mr Jha over the telephone on hearing the news of his appointment.
 
Dedicating his elevation to all stakeholders of MCL, particularly employees, the CMD said, 'It has been the dedication and efforts of each member of Team MCL that has made this company successful and I being given a higher responsibility by the Government of India.'
