NCL GIRL NUZHAT MAKES IT TO THE INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

Singrauli: On July 23, 2017 when Indians worldwide were rooting for India Women’s Cricket Team in ICC World Cup at Lord's Cricket Ground London, miles away in Singrauli, Masih Alam and his wife Nasima Begum had a special reason to cheer.

Nuzhat Masih Parween, member of India Women World Cup Cricket squad is daughter of Masih Alam who works as Dozer Operator in Jayant Area of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL). Nuzhat, 21, is first woman from Rewa division to get selected in the World Cup Indian Cricket Women Squad-2017.

“Thanks to the sports infrastructure and facilities available across NCL townships that help budding sports talent to make the move. Sportspersons and enthusiasts of the company are also always there to guide and mentor”, Nuzhat credits sports amenities at NCL.
Growing up in Jayant township NCL, Nuzhat played football with boys in Vijay Stadium of Jayant. At a very early age, Nuzhat Parween won laurels in athletics and football at junior state and national levels. By 2012, Nuzhat focused entirely on cricket and was selected in Under-19 Team of Rewa Division. Soon after that, she was selected in Under-19 Team of Central Zone. Her brilliant performance in various matches paved the way for her selection in Senior Team of Central Zone.

Getting the only chance to play in last game of Inter-Zonal Tournament 2014-15, Nuzhat scored a monstrous hundred in her inter zonal debut at Eden Gardens Kolkata. “I couldn’t really celebrate the moment. It took me a day or two to absorb everything”, reminisces Nuzhat as this was the first time ever she performed with and in front of cults of Indian Women Cricket; Diana Adulji, Hemalata Kala and Methali Raj.
Later in 2015, Nuzhat was inducted as wicket-keeper batter in Challenger Trophy in Pune where nimble glove-work of Nuzhat behind the wickets not only won her stumping of Mithali Raj but also brought with it the attention of National Selector’s Committee.
Attributing to the brilliant knocks in various state and zonal league matches, Nuzhat made her debut in Indian Women’s Cricket Team in T-20 Tournament against West Indies in Vijayawada International Cricket Stadium. She was also part of the squad for the Asia Cup T-20 Tournament in Thailand.
Nuzhat made her One Day International (ODI) debut against Ireland in South Africa Quadrangular Tournament held at Potchefstroom, South Africa.
On May 15, 2017, when Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the 11th ICC Women's World Cup; celebrations at Singrauli knew no bounds as the very NCL-girl Nuzhat Parween was a member of squad which were to represent India in World Cup to be held between June 24 and July 23, 2017 in England.

Having completed her schooling from various schools of NCL Township, Nuzhat secured 10 CGPA in 10th standard and 98.1% in 12th. The stats go well with what Nasima Begum, mother of Nuzhat shares, “After my oldest son went to USA and eldest daughter to Banglore, we always were clear that children will be allowed to pursue sports as long as they don’t compromise on studies.” Nuzhat’s oldest brother wrote GRE through which he went on to study in Mississippi State University. He currently works as mechanical engineer with a multinational company. Nuzhat’s elder sister, Nemat is working in Bangalore with Indian software giant, Infosys. Nuzhat is third child of Masih and Nasima. They also have a daughter and a son younger to Nuzhat who already are champions-in-making as the daughter Aashiya is state level athletic champion and son is bringing glories with outstanding marks scored in school curricula.

Having been raised in a family of coal miner, Nuzhat has unsurmountable grit and believes in ceasing the opportunities coming her way. Despite getting few chances to be in playing eleven, Nuzhat with her excellent performance has won hearts of millions and claimed a much coveted slot in World Cup Squad.
For Nuzhat, it is just a start and for everyone at NCL it is yet another proud moment when someone from NCL family excels in field of their choice and broadens the horizon of possibilities.

NCL is a Miniratna Company of Govt. of India and a subsidiary of Maharatna Company Coal India Limited. The company produces approx. 12 per cent of the national coal production from its 10 highly mechanized opencast mines.
