NRDC Para-Pheromone Fruit Fly Trap Technology bagged the National Technology Award.
NEW DELHI . Dr.Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India gave away the national award to Dr.Abraham Verghese, Dr.P.D.Kamala Jayanthi and Dr.T.N.Shivananda, Scientists from the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru who developed the cost effective, eco-friendly pheromone trap for effective monitoring of fruit flies belonging to Bactrocera spp. for use in horticultural crops.
The award was instituted by department of biotechnology in the annual technology day organised recently at New Delhi The award carries a cash reward amount of Rs.2.00 lakhs along with a citation.
Dr H Purushotham, the CMD , NRDC informed that the technical know-how/technology was assigned to National Research Development Corporation by ICAR-IIHR in the year 2009 for commercialization. Subsequently NRDC obtained patent rights on the innovative technology and licensed the technology to eleven companies in the country so far. The Para-Pheromone Fruit Fly Trap is effectively used for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for fruit crops like Mango, Guava, Anona, Banana, Papaya, Butter Fruit, Citrus, etc and requires about four to six traps per acre. The orchards using these devices for trapping of the fruit flies have shown excellent results in terms of fruit quality, appearance and shelf life of fruits. Dr Purushotham further emphasized that there is a huge potential for adopting this cost effective technology across the country and interested entrepreneurs can contact NRDC for licensing of the technology
