Kochi Refinery Observed World Cancer Day

New Delhi: Adding a few more rays of hope on World Cancer Day, (4 February 2020), Bharat Petroleum signed a memorandum of understanding for enhancing the Cancer Care facilities at the Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital, Kochi. The financial support as part of Health Care initiatives under CSR projects of Kochi Refinery is for extending new facilities like Chemotherapy suites, Oncology ICU and Blood storage units.
 
There has been an alarming increase in the number of cancer patients in the State of Kerala and as per recent statistics, Government hospitals alone have 57,727 new cancer cases registered between 2018-19. The numbers are likely to be higher, if data of private hospitals are also considered. Guided by these alarming statistics, cancer care has been given extra emphasis in Health Care projects by Kochi Refinery under Bharat Petroleum CSR initiatives.
 
The agreement signed today was handed over by Mr. G Ananthakrishnan, Chief General Manager (Finance), Kochi Refinery to Dr. VP Gangadharan, leading Oncologist in Kerala in the presence of Mr. P Murali Madhavan, ED(Kochi Refinery), Mr. Kurian P Alapatt, GM(HR), Mr. George Thomas, GM(PR&Admin) and Board Members of the Cooperative Hospital at the World Cancer Day celebrations of the hospital. Mr. Murali Madhavan, ED(KR) delivered the key-note address where he appreciated the untiring efforts of the hospital and nursing staff and also lauded the nursing students who had offered to donate their tresses for preparing wigs for cancer patients.
 
The exclusive Oncology Department has been recently introduced at the hospital under the leadership of Dr. VP Gangadharan, who had established the Medical Oncology Department in Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvanathapuram, the first of its kind in Kerala. A highly respected Oncologist, Dr Gangadharan is known for providing subsidized medicines and free counselling for the poor and needy. The cancer care extended at the Indira Gandhi Hospital is with medicines at subsidized rates for the poor and also free medicines for those who cannot afford at all. Free lunch is provided for oncology patients and bystanders and rooms are at highly subsidized rates. With the new facilities now being developed with the support of Bharat Petroleum, they are looking forward to extending better care to help each patient find a brighter ray of hope in their lonely battle to bounce back to life.
 
Other recent CSR initiatives of Kochi Refinery under health care includes financial support for the installation of a Linear accelerator at General Hospital, Ernakulam. Financial support was also extended for enhancing infrastructure in Government Hospitals in the District, installation of Dialysis units in Government hospitals, Marine ambulance to save the distressed at sea, Medical insurance for BPL residents near the Refinery, trauma care units and also extensive medical screening projects.
