World Environment Day: Does a Single day is Enough to clean our Environment?

World Environment Day: Does a Single day is Enough to clean our Environment?

International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool.

'World Environment Day' is the UN (United Nations) day to create worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. World Environment Day' began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries on 5th June every year.

According to a report World Economic Forum, 7 of the world’s 10 most polluted cities are in India. It is a big issue for the country like India which is still under development because coal is cheap and developing, economies like India prefer low-cost fuel sources. Coal-fired plants generate 72% of India’s electricity. Coal fossil is the biggest reason for Air pollution and climate change, without reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, especially coal, it is impossible to tackling climate change.

About 10,000 trees were planted from June 4 to 13 by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Ltd (NLCIL) as part of their World Environmental Day celebrations in Neyveli, this is a really big step taken toward the environment. PSUs are playing a Major role to create awareness among the General Public but that is not enough.

The government have to take some serious action to clean and save our environment. It is time to act decisively by focusing on new and renewable energy sources and reduce fossil fuel subsidies, and stop building new coal plants.
