Assam Signs MoU with AAI for Pre-Feasibility Study of Five Greenfield Airports

New Delhi: The Government of Assam has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to carry out pre‑feasibility studies for the development of five new greenfield airports in the state. This initiative aims to strengthen regional air connectivity, boost tourism, and drive long-term economic growth.

The agreement was formalized in Guwahati with senior officials from both the state government and AAI in attendance. Under the MoU, AAI will evaluate the technical, financial, and environmental viability of the proposed airports before detailed project reports are prepared.

Strategic and Economic Focus

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the plan focuses on establishing airports in locations with both strategic significance and high tourism potential. The initiative is expected to improve accessibility to remote regions, foster tourism, attract investment, and support overall economic development.

“The greenfield airports will enhance intra-state connectivity, making travel to remote and scenic locations faster and more convenient for both tourists and local communities,” the Chief Minister stated.

Proposed Greenfield Airport Locations

The five sites identified for potential greenfield airport development are:

  • Manas National Park — supporting eco-tourism and wildlife access.

  • Umrangshu, Dima Hasao district — improving connectivity to the hill regions.

  • Majuli — the world’s largest river island, rich in cultural and tourist significance.

  • Diphu, Karbi Anglong district — enhancing transport access to tribal areas.

  • Charaideo — a region with historical and cultural importance.

Next Steps and Broader Impact

AAI will conduct pre-feasibility evaluations covering runway planning, navigation and safety requirements, environmental impacts, projected passenger traffic, and financial estimates. Based on these findings, the state government will proceed with detailed project reports and approval processes.

Once completed, these airports are expected to reduce travel time to Assam’s remote districts, improve regional economic linkages, support emergency and disaster response, and strengthen infrastructure for strategic areas. The initiative marks a major step in integrating the Northeast region into the national aviation network while enhancing tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.
