Oil India signs MOU with CMC to build CNG Plant, worth Rs 150 crore

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) to build a compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Jagatpur that will cost Rs 150 crore. The concessionaire agreement, which was signed on Friday, describes the planning, funding, building, running, and upkeep of a facility that can process 200 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) every day.

The MoU was formalized by OIL’s Executive Director Ranjan Goswami and CMC Commissioner Anam Charan Patra, with Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra in attendance. This collaboration aims to revolutionize waste management and bolster clean energy infrastructure in the city.

The 11-acre plant is expected to be finished in 22 months. Every day, it will turn 200 tonnes of separated waste into 10–15 tonnes of organic manure and biogas. CMC will guarantee a consistent supply of segregated waste, while OIL will manage the project's operations and funding.

It is anticipated that the initiative will increase local employment by creating 75 direct jobs, ranging from technical to managerial positions. While the organic manure by-product will help agriculture, the plant's output, compressed biogas, will meet commercial and industrial demands and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This project serves Odisha's sustainable energy objectives while addressing waste disposal concerns.

Recently, CMC cleaned up 7,000 tonnes of legacy waste close to the Mahanadi riverbank following an Orissa High Court order in March 2024 prohibiting dumping at Gadagadia Ghat,

This facility in Cuttack is a component of a larger statewide project. A similar agreement for a 200 TPD plant with plans to grow to 300 TPD was signed by OIL and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation in December 2024. Similar initiatives are also moving forward in Puri, Sambalpur, Rourkela, and Berhampur, indicating that Odisha is strongly moving towards green energy.
