NGT not imposed any fine on NLC India directed to deposit interim compensation
Neyveli: NLC India has clarified that the Order of National Green Tribunal has been wrongly reported in the the select Media stating that the National Green Tribunal had imposed a fine of Rs.5.00 crore on NLCIL. This is factually not in line with the order passed by Hon’ble National Green Tribunal. In this case National Green Tribunal has directed to deposit interim compensation and not a fine.
In a press note issued by NLC Indian stated that consequent to a fire incident occurred in Unit-V of Thermal Power Station-II, NLCIL on 01-07-2020, six Contract workmen succumbed to injuries on the spot. After initial medical attention in NLCIL Hospital on 01-07-2020, sixteen number of injured were referred to Apollo Hospital, Chennai for further specialty treatment. One of the Contract Workmen was treated at NLCIL Hospital for minor injuries. Out of the sixteen who were under hospitalization at Chennai, seven passed away. Three of the injured had been discharged so far. The treatment is being continued for the rest.
In the mean time ‘Indian Express’ Dated : 01-07-2020, has reported that the National Green Tribunal initiated proceedings SUO MOTO and ordered for Hearing on 08-07-2020. NLCIL submitted a detailed reply statement on 07-07-2020. After hearing the detailed submissions made by NLCIL and the compensation package extended to the families of deceased and injured, the National Green Tribunal passed an order stating that the compensation package announced by NLCIL may be paid as an Interim Compensation pending final assessment by an Independent Committee appointed by NGT . The Tribunal also directed that an amount of Rs.5.00 crore towards this Interim Compensation shall be deposited by NLCIL to the District Magistrate, Cuddalore within two weeks of the Order dt : 08-07-2020.
