NLCIL bids emotional farewell to an iconic power station

Neyveli: The glorious journey of Thermal Power Station – I, which commenced in 1962, comes to an end with its retirement on 30th September, 2020. South Asia's first and only lignite–fired Thermal Power Station was set up following the discovery of lignite deposits in Neyveli. The 600MW Thermal Power Station-I, the epitome of Indo-Soviet collaboration with Nine Units, 6 Units of 50 MW capacity each and 3 Units of 100 MW capacity each, was commissioned between 1962 and 1970 in three stages. Unit l was synchronized with the grid on 23.05.1962 and the last unit (Unit 9) was synchronized with the grid on 21.02.1970. The Unit - I was dedicated to the Nation on 5th August 1962 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India.

TPS-I, as it was called, was also the first largest Thermal Power Station in South India.
This project was executed as a Turnkey project by M/s Technopromexport of erstwhile Soviet Union.
The power generated from this Thermal Station is supplied to the Tamil Nadu Generation & Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), the sole beneficiary.
