PNGRB to increase the market share of Natural Gas in India`s energy basket

Presently there are 228 Geographical Areas authorized by PNGRB in 27 States and U.T.s covering approximately 53% of the country’s geographical area and 70% of its population.

New Delhi: The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) was constituted under The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act, 2006 notified via Gazette Notification dated 31st March, 2006 to protect the interests of consumers and entities engaged in specified activities relating to petroleum, petroleum products and natural gas and to promote competitive markets and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

 

Accordingly, PNGRB authorises the CGD networks, natural gas and petroleum product pipelines, determines tariff, lays down the technical and safety standards etc. 

PNGRB’s current focus is to increase the market share of Natural Gas in India’s energy basket, create infrastructure to support higher consumption of Natural Gas, create a transparent and vibrant Natural Gas market and balance the interests of consumers, transporters and producers of Natural Gas.


Presently there are 228 Geographical Areas authorized by PNGRB in 27 States and U.T.s covering approximately 53% of the country’s geographical area and 70% of its population. In the last CGD bidding round, i.e., the 10th CGD biding round, 50 Geographical Areas were authorized for development of CGD Network. In order to further expand the reach of natural gas in the country, PNGRB has finalized a list of 65 Geographical Areas to be bid out in the 11th CGD Bidding Round.


Bids for the above-mentioned GAs shall be soon invited by PNGRB from interested stakeholders. The launch date of the 11th CGD Bidding Round and start of bidding shall be notified vide subsequent Public Notices.
