NHAI Strengthens Road Safety with Enhanced Guidelines for Metal Beam Crash Barriers

To improve road safety and elevate the quality of National Highway construction, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued directives mandating strict adherence to guidelines for the installation of Metal Beam Crash Barriers (MBCB). These barriers must comply with standards set by the Indian Road Congress (IRC) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for traffic safety barriers.

Contractors and concessionaires are required to ensure that the crash barriers are constructed using materials matching the specifications in the crash test reports. The barriers must also be installed following the precise methodology provided by the manufacturer. Additionally, contractors must secure certification from the manufacturer, confirming that the installed barriers meet the prescribed design, standards, and specifications. Proper ground layer compaction at installation sites is another key requirement to ensure barrier effectiveness.

Manufacturers of the Metal Beam Crash Barriers have also been directed to emboss each element with identifiable details, including the brand name, lot or batch number, steel grade, and other relevant information. A QR code must be provided on each barrier, offering easy access to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and installation methodology at the project site. Approval by Authority Engineers or Independent Engineers will only be granted after verifying that the crash barriers meet all technical specifications and design standards outlined in the crash test reports.

These comprehensive measures aim to hold contractors accountable for delivering high-quality infrastructure while significantly enhancing the safety of National Highway users. By implementing these guidelines, NHAI reiterates its commitment to setting new benchmarks in highway construction and ensuring safer travel for all.
