REC, PFC signs MoU with Kholongchhu Hydro Energy Ltd

New Delhi: REC Limited and Power Finance Corporation Limited signed MoU with Kholongchhu Hydro Energy Ltd. for extending a loan of around Rs. 4400 Crore for 600 MW hydroelectric project in Bhutan. The MoU was signed in the presence of CMDs of REC, PFC & SJVNL, Chairman KHEL, Director Technical & Finance of REC, and other senior officials.
The Kholongchhu Hydro Energy Limited has been registered as a Joint Venture Company of SJVN (India) and DrukGreen (Bhutan) under the Companies Act of Kingdom of Bhutan, 2000 for the development of the 600 MW Kholongchhu Hydro Electric Project in eastern Bhutan. The earlier Pre-Feasibility Study for the Project prepared by IBRD & Dept of Power, Bhutan, under Bhutan Power System Master Plan, in the year 1993 envisaged the proposal to have the Project with an installed capacity of 290 MW. However, the Updated Power System Master Plan of Bhutan (2004) revised the installed capacity of the Project to 486 MW.
The 600 MW hydroelectric project will be located on the Kholongchhu river in the Trashiyangtse district of eastern Bhutan. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025. The project will consist of an underground powerhouse of four 150 MW turbines, which will be impounded with water from a concrete gravity dam with a height of 95 meters.
