Srilankan Def. Secretary Reviews Construction of OPV

Vasco: High-level Srilankan Defence delegation headed by Mr Kapila Waidyaratane PC, Secretary of Defence, visited Goa Shipyard Ltd on 11th Jan 2018. He was accompanied by Commander of Sri Lanka Army, DG of Sri Lanka Navy, DG Sri Lanka Coast Guard and other senior officials of Sri Lanka Ministry of Defence. During the visit, Defence Secretary held discussions with RAdm Shekhar Mital, NM, IN (Retd), CMD and other senior officers of the company.
 
The delegation was conducted around the shipyard by CMD GSL and was shown the ongoing shipbuilding activities including Second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) being built for Sri Lanka Navy. The yard has already delivered the First OPV to Srilanka, ahead of contractual delivery schedule. The vessel was commissioned by Srilankan President on 02 Aug 2017 and has received admiration from Srilankan Navy for its excellent operational performance. The Secretary was impressed with the Shipyard’s infrastructure and the excellent quality of workmanship.
 
Earlier a presentation was made to the Srilankan Delegation on the ongoing projects at GSL, current progress of 2nd OPV under construction at GSL as well as future potential of cooperation. Secretary appreciated GSL for its outstanding execution record and the technological innovations on the ships delivered as well as under construction. He appreciated design capabilities of the shipyard and expressed interest of enhancing interaction with GSL, going forward.
