Mumbai, India – In a lively discussion at a prominent Mumbai tech event, Jio Chairman Akash Ambani shared his vision for India’s technological future, emphasizing the country’s potential to lead in the global AI landscape and the importance of public-private partnerships.

Ambani, in conversation with Dream11 founder Harsh Jain, addressed concerns about India lagging behind in technology, asserting that the nation has already proven its ability to be a frontrunner. He highlighted Jio’s role in transforming India into the world’s largest data-consuming nation and expressed his belief that AI will be the engine driving India’s double-digit growth.

“Gone are the days that we should think about India from a tech laggard perspective,” Ambani stated, emphasizing Jio's commitment to investing in AI infrastructure, research and development, and talent. He revealed that Jio is building a gigawatt capacity AI data center in Jamnagar and has assembled a team of over a thousand data scientists, researchers, and engineers.

Ambani also addressed the common concern about AI displacing jobs, arguing that it will instead transform them by automating mundane tasks and creating new industries, much like the internet did. He cited examples of AI being used within Jio to proactively monitor network performance and within educational initiatives to streamline administrative processes.

He outlined a “deep tech” approach to solving complex problems like education and agriculture, emphasizing the need for a holistic strategy that combines connectivity, compute, devices, content, and intelligence. He stressed the importance of seamless customer experiences and collaboration with existing institutions.
