Engineering and infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order for the construction of a landmark cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga River in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

The project, awarded to L&T’s Transportation Infrastructure division, involves building a 3.2-km 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres, along with approach roads on both sides — 0.9 km at Kakdwip and 0.65 km at Sagar Island.

The bridge will feature advanced traffic management systems, bridge health monitoring, architectural lighting, hybrid street lighting, and modern road safety infrastructure.

Transforming Sagar Island’s Connectivity

The new bridge will provide direct, all-weather connectivity to Sagar Island, which currently relies heavily on ferry services that are frequently disrupted during bad weather.

The project is expected to benefit over two lakh residents by improving access to healthcare, boosting economic activity and enhancing daily mobility.

It will also significantly strengthen pilgrimage infrastructure by enabling safer and smoother travel for millions of devotees attending the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, the second-largest religious gathering in India after the Kumbh Mela.

Larsen & Toubro is a USD 30 billion multinational company engaged in EPC projects, hi-tech manufacturing and services across multiple geographies.
