L&T Wins Major Order for LIGO India Observatory in Maharashtra

New Delhi, February 24, 2026: Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) has secured a significant order from the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, to construct the LIGO India Observatory in Aundha, Hingoli district, Maharashtra.

The project, undertaken jointly by L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure (HCI) and Heavy Engineering (HE) verticals, is part of India’s flagship “Mega Science” initiatives. The observatory will use Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) technology to detect gravitational waves from cosmic events, employing multi-kilometer-scale laser interferometry.

Scope of Work

L&T’s contract covers:

  • Engineering, procurement, and construction of vibration-sensitive, high-precision civil infrastructure.

  • Manufacturing and installation of ultra-high vacuum compatible 8 km beam tube and critical vacuum equipment.

  • Integration of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire protection, vacuum control, monitoring systems, and all supporting utilities.

  • Project completion within 48 months.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between premier Indian research institutions — RRCAT and IPR — and the LIGO Laboratory, USA, with support from Caltech and MIT.

Strengthening India’s Mega Science Capabilities

This order reinforces L&T’s reputation in executing complex science and technology projects, showcasing its expertise in high-precision infrastructure and advanced engineering solutions.
