New Delhi, June 11, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a long-term framework for collaborative research, innovation, development, testing, deployment and commercialization of next-generation telecom and digital technologies.

The partnership aims to combine IIT Kanpur's research capabilities and innovation ecosystem with BSNL's nationwide telecom infrastructure and operational reach to accelerate indigenous technology development in line with national priorities.

Focus on Next-Generation Technologies

Under the collaboration, IIT Kanpur and BSNL will work on several advanced technology areas, including:

  • Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting technology

  • 4G, 5G and future communication networks

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)-driven telecom solutions

  • Cybersecurity technologies

  • Cloud and edge computing

  • GPU and High-Performance Computing (HPC)-enabled platforms

  • Digital Public Infrastructure

  • Emerging technologies supporting India's digital transformation

 

Strengthening Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat

The partnership seeks to promote indigenous innovation and strengthen India's telecom and digital infrastructure ecosystem.

By leveraging BSNL's operational scale and IIT Kanpur's academic and research expertise, both institutions aim to support the government's vision of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, while enhancing technological self-reliance.
