IIT Madras tops NIRF rankings for seventh year in a row, IISc Bengaluru named best university.
IIT Madras secures first place overall in NIRF Rankings 2025 for the seventh year. IISc Bengaluru, Hindu College, and AIIMS Delhi lead in their categories.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has once again been recognized as India's top higher education institution in the government’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. This marks its seventh consecutive year at the top in the overall category.

The Ministry of Education released the 10th edition of the rankings on Thursday. IISc Bengaluru was named the best university, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi and Manipal Academy of Higher Education in second and third places, respectively.
Hindu College in Delhi maintained its top rank in the colleges category, while Miranda House and Hansraj College took the second and third spots.
IIT Madras also led the engineering category, followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. IIM Ahmedabad was recognized as the country’s best management institute, while Jamia Hamdard in New Delhi took first place in the pharmacy category. AIIMS New Delhi continued to hold its position as the best medical college in India.
This year’s rankings evaluated institutions across 17 categories, using factors such as teaching, research, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and perception.
Institutions were ranked on five main factors: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.

The NIRF was introduced in 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, now known as the Ministry of Education, to create a clear framework for evaluating higher education institutions across the country.
