India Considers Nuclear Power Option for Andaman & Nicobar Islands Amid Rising Strategic Importance
New Delhi, September 7, 2026: India is examining whether nuclear energy could help meet the future electricity requirements of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as the strategically located archipelago undergoes a major infrastructure push.
A team of scientists and officials associated with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and the Department of Atomic Energy is evaluating possible locations across the Union Territory for the potential deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
The ongoing exercise is focused on understanding whether the islands can support such advanced nuclear power technology. At this stage, the initiative remains an assessment exercise, and it should not be interpreted as a final decision to construct a nuclear power plant.
Why Are SMRs Being Considered?
The islands are expected to require substantially more electricity as several large infrastructure projects move forward.
Among the developments planned in the region are the International Container Transshipment Terminal at Galathea Bay, a new international airport, port infrastructure and other supporting facilities.
Small Modular Reactors could potentially provide a dependable power source while requiring a smaller physical footprint than conventional large nuclear plants. Their modular design also makes them an area of growing interest for locations with specialised energy requirements.
However, any future nuclear project would have to undergo detailed technical assessments as well as environmental, regulatory and safety approvals.
Andaman & Nicobar's Strategic Location
The power proposal also comes at a time when the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are gaining greater importance in India's maritime strategy.
Located close to the Malacca Strait, the islands sit near one of the world's busiest maritime routes linking the Indian Ocean with Southeast Asia and the wider Pacific region.
The location gives India an important geographical advantage for monitoring maritime activity and strengthening its presence in the eastern Indian Ocean.
China's expanding economic and naval footprint across the Indian Ocean has further increased the strategic relevance of the archipelago. India has consequently been strengthening connectivity, surveillance and defence infrastructure in the region.
Great Nicobar at the Centre of Development Push
A major part of India's plans is centred on Great Nicobar Island, where a large-scale development programme is being pursued.
The proposed infrastructure includes a major container transshipment terminal, an international airport, power facilities and a new township. Once developed, the region is expected to play a larger role in India's maritime trade and connectivity.
The scale of these projects is likely to create additional demand for reliable power, making alternative energy sources an important part of long-term planning for the islands.
What This Means for India's Nuclear Sector
The consideration of SMRs in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands also reflects India's broader interest in expanding nuclear energy and exploring newer reactor technologies.
For remote and strategically important regions, a reliable domestic electricity source could support both civilian infrastructure and long-term national development objectives.
For now, however, the focus remains on evaluating feasibility and identifying suitable sites. Any decision to move ahead with nuclear reactors in the islands would depend on the outcome of these studies and subsequent regulatory approvals.
If the proposal eventually moves forward, it could mark an important step in India's efforts to combine clean energy, infrastructure development and strategic connectivity in one of the country's most strategically significant regions.
