India’s 'FRI' System Saves ₹660 Crore from Cyber Frauds in Just 6 Months

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has achieved a major milestone in the fight against cyber fraud, with over 1,000 banks, Third-Party Application Providers (TPAPs), and financial institutions now onboarded on its Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP).

With strong support from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform has seen rapid adoption across the financial ecosystem. As of now, more than 1,000 banks, payment system operators, and fintech players are actively using DoT’s Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) to detect and prevent fraud.

Since its launch on May 22, 2025, the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) has helped prevent cyber fraud losses worth nearly ₹660 crore in just six months. Banks and financial institutions reported that thousands of suspicious transactions were either blocked or flagged using alerts generated through FRI, saving customers and institutions from potential losses.

Role of Citizens and Sanchar Saathi

DoT highlighted the crucial role of citizen participation (Jan Bhagidari) in combating cybercrime. The Sanchar Saathi platform has emerged as a powerful tool where citizens report suspected fraud calls, fake SIM connections, and lost or stolen mobile phones. These citizen inputs directly strengthen the FRI system by helping authorities identify fraud patterns and block misuse of telecom resources.

The growing number of users downloading and actively using the Sanchar Saathi mobile app reflects increasing public trust and awareness.

How Sanchar Saathi Helps

Sanchar Saathi allows users to:

  • Report suspected fraud calls and SMS instantly

  • Check mobile numbers registered in their name

  • Block and trace lost or stolen phones

  • Verify the authenticity of mobile handsets

  • Access verified contact details of banks and financial institutions

The platform is available through a web portal and mobile apps on both Android and iOS.

Strengthening India’s Digital Economy

DoT reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure digital payments ecosystem through close coordination with RBI, NPCI, SEBI, PFRDA, banks, telecom service providers, and citizens. The department urged all users to actively use Sanchar Saathi to help prevent cyber fraud and protect less-informed citizens.
