Ministry of Coal Boosts First Mile Connectivity with 139 FMC Projects
The Ministry of Coal has undertaken 139 First Mile Connectivity projects with a total capacity of 1,319 million tonnes. Sixty five projects are operational with 552 million tonnes capacity achieved.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal is strengthening India’s coal transportation infrastructure through its First Mile Connectivity initiative. The programme aims to make coal movement from mines to railways faster, cleaner, and more efficient.
Under this initiative, a total of 139 First Mile Connectivity projects have been undertaken across the country with a combined planned capacity of 1,319 million tonnes. Out of these, 65 projects have already been commissioned and are operational, enabling coal handling capacity of 552 million tonnes.
First Mile Connectivity refers to the direct linkage of coal mines to railway loading points using mechanised systems such as conveyor belts, silos, and automated loading arrangements. This system reduces dependence on road transport and minimises manual handling of coal.
The initiative offers multiple benefits, including faster evacuation of coal, reduction in transportation costs, improved safety, and lower environmental impact due to reduced dust and emissions. It also ensures timely supply of coal to thermal power plants, contributing to uninterrupted power generation.
The Ministry of Coal stated that First Mile Connectivity projects are a key component of India’s efforts to strengthen energy security while promoting sustainable and efficient mining practices. The seamless connection between mines and railways has significantly improved operational efficiency in coal movement.
