India and USA collaborated to signify Railways Net Zero Carbon Emissions

The Cabinet committee of Parliament has approved the signing of memorandum of understanding [MoU], between India and USA to collaborate towards the support for Indian Railways to achieve Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030.

This MoU will provide a global level platform for Railways sectors to interact and share the latest developments, innovations and knowledge in that particular sector. It will facilitate utility modernization, technological advancement, revising energy solutions and systems, private sector participation and creative enhancement. In addition to this, vocational training, engagement, seminars and workshops focusing on specific technology areas like Renewable Energy, energy efficiency and other interactions for knowledge sharing.

The memorandum is not new, earlier, USAID/India had also worked with IR focused on deployment of rooftop solar across railway platforms.

The MoU signing participants have intended to jointly work broadly upon some key fundamental activity areas whose details are explained following-

1- Long term energy planning including clean energy for Indian Railways.

2-Will develop an Energy Efficiency Policy and Action Plan for Indian Railway Buildings. 

3- Planning strategy for clean energy procurements to achieve Indian Railway's net zero vision.

4-Providing technical support for addressing regulatory and implementation barriers.

5- To support Indian Railways in the promotion of e-mobility.

6-Jointly collaborating to host events, conferences, and capacity-building programs in the above-mentioned areas.

The MoU is assigned to be for five years of tenure or until the end of the South Asia Regional Energy Partnership [SAREP]. The respective collaboration will provide aid in achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, for Railway sectors. It will help reduce dependency over imported fuel such as Diesel, Coal etc. Deployment of Renewable Energy [RE] plants will give a boost to RE technology and subsequently development of the local ecosystem.
