Indian Army Signs MoU with IISc Bengaluru to Develop Indigenous AI System under Atmanirbhar Bharat
New Delhi / Bengaluru: Reaffirming its commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Indian Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to develop a fully indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI)–based system through collaborative research and innovation.
The initiative aims to address emerging challenges in the digital information landscape, strengthening the Indian Army’s technological capabilities through homegrown solutions. The project will be realised in partnership with Indy Astra, an indigenous startup, bringing together the combined strengths of the armed forces, academia, and Indian industry.
Strengthening Self-Reliant Defence Capabilities
The collaboration represents a significant step toward self-reliant capability development, aligning with the Government of India’s national vision of reducing dependence on imported technologies in critical defence domains.
By leveraging IISc’s academic and research expertise, Indian Army’s operational experience, and Indian industry’s innovation ecosystem, the initiative seeks to create robust, secure, and scalable AI-driven solutions tailored to national security requirements.
Focus on Digital Information Challenges
The proposed AI-based system will focus on tackling evolving challenges in the digital and information domain, an area of growing importance in modern military operations. The collaboration underscores the Indian Army’s proactive approach in adopting advanced technologies to remain future-ready.
This MoU further strengthens the synergy between defence forces, premier academic institutions, and indigenous startups, reinforcing India’s journey toward technological self-reliance and innovation-led defence preparedness.
