LPG Aadhaar eKYC Not Mandatory for All Consumers, Clarifies Government
New Delhi, March 2026: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a clarification regarding recent reports on mandatory biometric Aadhaar authentication (eKYC) for LPG consumers, stating that the requirement does not apply to all customers.
No New Directive Issued
According to the ministry, the recent communication circulating on social media is not a fresh directive. Instead, it is part of ongoing efforts to encourage LPG users to complete Aadhaar-based eKYC for improved transparency and efficiency.
Who Needs to Complete eKYC?
The ministry clarified the following key points:
-
Only unauthenticated LPG consumers who have not completed eKYC are required to do so.
-
Non-PMUY customers who have already completed Aadhaar authentication do not need to repeat the process.
-
Beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana are required to complete eKYC once every financial year, and only to receive targeted Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) subsidies after seven refills (on the 8th and 9th refill).
LPG Supply Remains Unaffected
The ministry emphasized that LPG refill supply will not be impacted under any circumstances due to eKYC status, addressing concerns raised by consumers.
Easy and Free Process
Consumers can complete the eKYC process from home at no cost, making it convenient and accessible.
Ensuring Transparency and Efficiency
The Aadhaar-based authentication system aims to:
-
Ensure transparency in subsidy distribution
-
Establish clear eligibility criteria
-
Eliminate duplicate or ghost connections
-
Prevent diversion of LPG cylinders
Conclusion:
The government has reassured LPG consumers that Aadhaar-based eKYC is not universally mandatory and is only required for specific cases. Consumers who have already completed authentication can continue using LPG services without any disruption.
