Project Veer Gatha: What Is It? Government Initiative Crosses 1.92 Crore Student Participants, Sets New Record

New Delhi, January 17, 2026: Project Veer Gatha, the Government of India’s nationwide school program to inspire students through stories of bravery of Gallantry Award winners, has achieved an unprecedented milestone, engaging 1.92 crore (19.2 million) students—surpassing last year’s record of 1.76 crore participants.

Launched in 2021, the initiative has grown exponentially from 8 lakh students in its first edition to become one of the largest patriotic educational campaigns in the country.

What is Project Veer Gatha?

Project Veer Gatha is an annual educational initiative jointly organized by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education. The project aims to bring real-life stories of courage and sacrifice of India’s Gallantry Award winners—such as Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, and Kirti Chakra recipients—into school curriculums and activities.

Key Objectives:

  • To instill patriotism, courage, and civic responsibility among school-going children.

  • To help students connect with the valour and sacrifices of armed forces and police personnel.

  • To encourage creative expression through essays, poems, drawings, and multimedia projects based on bravery stories.

  • To integrate tales of national heroes into the learning environment beyond textbooks.

How Does It Work?

Schools across India participate by organizing activities where students engage with the stories of bravehearts. Students submit their creative projects, and outstanding entries are recognized at school, state, and national levels. The project leverages digital portals, webinars, and curated content to reach students in both urban and rural areas.

The jump from 1.76 crore to 1.92 crore participants within a year reflects deepening engagement and increased institutional adoption.

Why This Matters:

  1. Nation-Building: Aligns with national goals to foster respect for India’s defense forces and unity.

  2. Youth Inspiration: Moves beyond theoretical teaching to experiential learning about bravery and sacrifice.

  3. Digital & Inclusive: Reaches remote schools through online resources, ensuring pan-India participation.

  4. Creative Pedagogy: Encourages art-integrated learning, making lessons on patriotism interactive and memorable.

Government’s Vision:

A senior official stated, “Project Veer Gatha is more than a program—it’s a movement to embed the spirit of bravery in our youth. Crossing 1.9 crore students shows how deeply today’s generation values courage and patriotism.”

The initiative continues to expand each year with new modules, regional language content, and teacher-training workshops to sustain its impact.
