World environment day 2024 observed at NLC India Limited

New Delhi: The “World Environment Day” was observed at NLC India Limited on June 5, 2024. The event was marked by plantation of saplings by Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD, NLCIL along with Functional Directors, Environmental experts invited as guests and senior officials of NLCIL. This was followed by a function at the Learning & Development Centre, NLCIL where power point presentations on environmental issues were made.

The “World Environment Day” is celebrated every year on June 5 all over the world. The theme set for World Environment Day 2024 was “Land Restoration desertification and drought resilience” with the slogan, “Our Land, Our future.

At NLCIL, the event was celebrated in a grand manner. As an innovative initiative, Bamboo saplings were planted all along the compound wall of the Learning & Development Centre, Neyveli by CMD, NLCIL, Functional Directors, Environmental experts invited for the celebrations and senior officials of NLCIL.

Bamboo trees can be trimmed to a desired uniform height and they are environmental friendly too. In due course, these can replace the compound wall itself. As a Bamboo grove is known to release 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees, planting Bamboo reduces the carbon footprint and helps fight global warming.

Later, a function was held at the Yegneswaran auditorium at Learning & Development Centre. Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD, NLCIL, was the Chief Guest of the function. Power Point Presentations were made on the importance of natural resources and a healthy ecosystem by the Environmental experts Dr. D. Narasimhan, Expert Member, State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), Tamil Nadu, MoEF & CC, Dr. M. Bharathi, Member, NITI Aayog, Advisory Member, Ministry of Rural Development, GoI and Dr. M.R. Subramaniyan, Executive Director, National Agro Foundation, Chennai & Expert Member, SEAC, Tamil Nadu, MoEF & CC.

NLCIL’s Functional Directors Shri Suresh Chandra Suman, Director (Mines), Shri Samir Swarup, Director (HR), Shri Prasanna Kumar Acharya, Director (Finance) and Senior officials of NLCIL participated.

Delivering the presidential address, Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD, NLCIL, stated that even our holy scriptures like Ramayana and the Mahabharata, have references to the co-existence of human beings and nature. The growing imbalance in the environment due to urbanisation and de-forestation is the reason for environmental damage which results in extreme temperatures and floods all over the world. He also stated that NLCIL took specific initiatives to contain environmental degradation, well before the statutory stipulations were put in place to mitigate environmental issues. Further he added that NLCIL is continuously giving importance for environmental protection in its Mines and Thermal Power Stations by undertaking measures to reduce pollution and resorting to land reclamation.

Shri Anurag Mittal, Chief General Manager, Environment Cell / NLCIL welcomed the gathering and Shri Saravanabhavan, General Manager (I/C), Learning and Development Centre proposed vote of thanks.
