Silchar, March 14, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar, located in the Barak Valley region of Assam, marking a major push for infrastructure, connectivity, and economic growth in Northeast India.

Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister said that the Barak Valley’s cultural diversity and economic potential make it a crucial region for the country’s development.

Northeast at the Center of Act East Policy

Highlighting the strategic importance of the region, the Prime Minister said that Northeast India has become the center of India’s Act East Policy, serving as a bridge connecting India with Southeast Asia.

He emphasized that the projects launched today would strengthen road, rail, and educational infrastructure, generating employment opportunities and boosting trade across the region.

Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor

Among the major announcements was the ₹24,000 crore Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, an access-controlled highway designed to transform regional connectivity.

The corridor will link Silchar with Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura, and eventually connect the region to markets in Southeast Asia, supporting industries, agriculture, and tourism.

Infrastructure Boost for Barak Valley

The Prime Minister also highlighted several other initiatives aimed at improving urban and regional infrastructure, including:

  • A new flyover in Silchar to reduce traffic congestion

  • Railway electrification of more than 2,500 km of railway tracks in Assam

  • Development initiatives to transform Barak Valley into a major logistics and trade hub for Northeast India

He noted that improved transport systems will reduce travel time and promote environmentally friendly rail operations.

Support for Farmers and Tea Garden Workers

PM Modi praised the contributions of farmers and tea garden workers to the development of Assam. He noted that over ₹20,000 crore has been transferred to farmers in Assam under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

The Prime Minister also announced the establishment of the first Agriculture College in the region at Patharkandi, which will strengthen agricultural research and promote agri-startups among local youth.

Vibrant Village Programme Expansion

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s focus on developing border regions under the Vibrant Village Programme, stating that border villages are considered the “first villages of the country.”

He said the next phase of the programme was launched from Cachar district, bringing improved infrastructure and services to villages in the Barak Valley.

A New Era for Northeast Development

The Prime Minister also highlighted progress in education, healthcare, and technology, noting that Assam is emerging as a healthcare and semiconductor hub with the development of new institutions and advanced industries.

He concluded by stating that the development initiatives launched in Silchar represent the beginning of a new era of growth for the Barak Valley and the entire Northeast region, positioning it as a key center for trade, connectivity, and innovation.
