New Delhi: The Managing Director of DMRC inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Tunnelling and Tunnel Training Centre, a premier hub for research, innovation, and industry collaboration in the field of Tunnelling, on 25.02.2025 at DMRC Academy, Shastri Park, New Delhi. The inauguration function was attended by several dignitaries from reputed academic institutes (like IIT Delhi, IIT BHU, DTU etc.) and industries.
This state-of-the-art facility is set to revolutionize Tunnelling technology by fostering cutting-edge research, advanced training programs, and real-world industry solutions.
With rapid urbanization and infrastructure development, tunnelling plays a critical role in shaping sustainable cities and efficient transportation networks. The Centre will serve as a knowledge powerhouse, bringing together leading experts, researchers, and professionals to drive advancements in tunnel design, construction, and safety.
Centre of Excellence in Tunnelling is a joint initiative of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) and Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. By combining DMRC’s extensive industry experience with IIT BHU’s academic excellence, the center aims to drive cutting-edge advancements in tunnel design, construction techniques, safety protocols, and workforce training.
This inauguration marks a major step toward bridging the gap between research and real-world implementation, ensuring India remains at the forefront of Tunnelling innovation.
The Centre of Excellence in Tunnelling is a state-of-the-art facility which has smart class features, AR/VR lab for immersive learning experiences etc. Tunnel Training Centre is a 25 m True Scale Tunnel model which is an exact replica of actual Tunnel in operation. This helps in training of participants in actual tunnel conditions without taking blocks and affecting the regular metro operation works.
Among the many significant milestones celebrated during the inaugural function, the unveiling of the Cutter Head stood out as a key highlight, marking a major step forward in training of working professionals in the field of Tunnel technology.
