New Delhi, April 15, 2026: In a major push towards clean energy, GAIL (India) Limited has approved an investment of ₹3,800 crore to develop 700 MW of solar power projects across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The move marks a significant step in the company’s long-term strategy to accelerate renewable energy adoption and support India’s transition to greener power.

 

Major Solar Project Planned in Uttar Pradesh

The largest part of the investment will go into a 600 MW solar power project at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi. The project will also include a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to ensure round-the-clock availability of renewable energy.

The solar power generated here will primarily support the captive energy needs of GAIL’s petrochemical plant in Pata, Auraiya district. By producing its own green power, the company aims to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and cut emissions.

 

Additional Solar Capacity in Maharashtra

GAIL will also set up a 100 MW solar power project with a 22 MWh battery storage system in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district (formerly Aurangabad) in Maharashtra.

This facility will supply renewable power to the company’s PDH-PP plant at Usar in Raigad district, further strengthening the company’s clean energy footprint.

Renewable Capacity to Cross 1,000 MW

According to Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta, GAIL’s renewable energy capacity will grow sharply once these projects are operational.

The company’s installed renewable capacity is currently 147 MW and is expected to cross 1,000 MW after commissioning of the new solar projects.

This expansion is part of GAIL’s broader Net Zero journey, aligning the company’s growth with environmental responsibility and long-term energy security.

 

 

Why Battery Storage Matters

A key feature of both projects is the integration of battery energy storage systems. These systems help tackle the biggest challenge of solar energy — intermittency — by storing excess power and supplying it when sunlight is unavailable.

This ensures:

  • Stable and reliable power supply

  • Efficient use of solar generation

  • Increased adoption of renewable energy
