IndianOil Foundation Day: How a 1964 Merger Created India’s Energy Giant
Every year on 1 September, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IndianOil) observes its Foundation Day. The date marks a defining moment in India’s energy history.
The Birth of IndianOil
On 1 September 1964, two government-owned companies — Indian Oil Company Limited (set up in 1959 for marketing petroleum products) and Indian Refineries Limited (established in 1958) — were merged. The new entity was named Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
The merger created India’s first major integrated oil refining and marketing company. The vision was to build a self-reliant national oil company that could reduce dependence on foreign oil firms and ensure energy availability across the country.
From Modest Beginnings to National Reach
In its early years, IndianOil started with limited refining capacity and a small marketing network. Over the decades, it steadily expanded:
-
Built a large network of refineries
-
Developed one of the country’s longest petroleum product pipeline systems
-
Expanded its retail presence to tens of thousands of fuel stations
-
Entered aviation fuel, lubricants, petrochemicals and natural gas
Today, IndianOil is India’s largest downstream energy company and a regular presence in the Fortune Global 500 list.
A Trusted Name Across India
IndianOil’s reach extends from major cities to remote areas. Its fuel stations, LPG distribution network and pipeline infrastructure form a critical part of the country’s energy supply system. The company has also played an important role in ensuring fuel supplies during national emergencies and challenging times.
Looking Ahead
While continuing to meet India’s conventional energy needs, IndianOil has expanded into newer areas such as biofuels, renewable energy, green hydrogen and petrochemicals. These steps reflect its effort to support India’s long-term energy transition while remaining a key supplier of everyday fuels.
As IndianOil marks another Foundation Day, it stands as one of the most important institutions in India’s energy story — born from a strategic merger in 1964 and shaped by decades of expansion, service and nation-building.
