Major Milestone Achieved at NHPC Subansiri Lower HE Project as Stator for Unit 5 is Successfully Lowered
Gerukamukh, Arunachal Pradesh/Assam – In a significant step toward the commissioning of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, NHPC Limited successfully lowered the Generator Stator of Unit #5 into its designated barrel on August 8, 2025. This accomplishment marks a major milestone for one of India's largest and most ambitious hydroelectric ventures.
The Generator Stator, a monumental piece of equipment, is the largest of its kind in any Indian hydro project. Weighing a colossal 395 tonnes and boasting an impressive bore diameter of 11.5 meters, its successful placement is a testament to the engineering prowess and meticulous planning of the teams involved.

The momentous occasion was virtually attended by a host of senior NHPC officials, including Shri Rajendra Prasad Goyal, CMD, who remotely graced the event from the corporate office. He was joined by Shri Uttam Lal, Director (Personnel), Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), Shri Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), and Shri Santosh Kumar, CVO, among others. Their remote presence underscored the national importance of the project.
At the project site, the event was witnessed firsthand by the Executive Director & HOP, senior project officials, and representatives from M/s GE Vernova, the executing agency responsible for the electro-mechanical works. The collaboration between NHPC and M/s GE Vernova has been crucial in reaching this stage of the project.

He highlighted that this accomplishment is a key step that paves the way for the early commissioning of five units, totaling 1250 MW, out of the project's eight total units (each with a capacity of 250 MW).
The Subansiri Lower HE Project, a run-of-river scheme located on the Subansiri River near the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border, is set to be a cornerstone of India's renewable energy infrastructure. Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate approximately 7421.59 million units of electricity annually, contributing significantly to the power grid of the northeastern and eastern regions of the country. This milestone brings the project one step closer to its goal of providing clean, reliable energy and fulfilling its immense potential for India's power sector.
