NHPC Subansiri Lower Unit 2 Commercial Operation Commences
New Delhi: NHPC Limited has reached a critical turning point in India's energy journey by declaring the commercial operation of Unit 2 at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. This 250 MW unit is the first to go live in what will eventually be a massive 2,000 MW installation on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
Union Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the unit virtually, emphasizing that this achievement is a testament to the nation's commitment to clean, sustainable power and a significant step toward a greener future.
Regional Development and Socio-Economic Impact
Beyond just power generation, the project is designed to be a catalyst for growth in the North-East. By allocating 1,000 MW specifically for the region and providing free electricity to the host states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the project ensures that local communities are the primary beneficiaries of their natural resources. NHPC has also demonstrated its commitment to local welfare through massive CSR investments totaling ₹155 crore, focusing on healthcare and infrastructure development in the surrounding areas.
Technical Progress and Future Roadmap
The successful commissioning of Unit 2 is just the beginning of a phased rollout. NHPC’s leadership, including CMD Bhupender Gupta and the project team at Subansiri, are now focused on bringing three more units online shortly. The remaining four units are scheduled for commissioning during the 2026-27 period. As a "100% Green Energy Company," NHPC continues to strengthen the national grid, with this project alone set to supply electricity to 16 states, ensuring long-term energy security for the country.
