The Civil Division of the Institution of Engineers (India), Neyveli Local Centre, hosted a one-day Seminar on the theme “Utilisation of Construction Demolition & Industrial Waste in Construction Industry” in association with NLCIL, Annamalai University and CK Engineering College, Cuddalore on 15.02.25 at the Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers building in Neyveli. 

Er. M. Venkatachalam, Director (Power) NLCIL and Chairman, Institution of Engineers India, Neyveli Local Centre, was the Chief Guest of the function.

Dr. S. Nagan, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai was the Guest of Honour.  Dr.S.Thirugnasambandam, Professor of the Civil Engineering Department, at Annamalai University, was the Convenor of the Seminar.

Er. M. Venkatachalam, in his speech, pointed out that the earth was not a property that we inherited but the debt we owe to our coming generations and hence we should safely hand it over to them.  Of the total biomass on the earth, human beings represented only 0.01%, but consume almost all resources on Earth.

He highlighted the fact that no physical material can be classified as waste as every object has some value. With proper technology we can always reuse or recycle them, he said. Similarly, construction and demolition waste called C&D waste in technical parlance can always be recycled into something useful.

Dr. S. Nagan, the Guest of Honour, delivering the keynote address on the theme of utilization of construction demolition and industrial waste in the construction industry, detailed how debris could be recycled by separating and processing construction debris to reuse materials like aggregate in new concrete projects.

The seminar saw a discussion on the way forward in implementing sustainable construction practices and embracing new technologies that facilitate efficient material usage and waste minimization. Earlier, Er.A. Eraniyan, Honorary Secretary, delivered the welcome address while   Er. M. Anbalagan Joint Honorary Secretary, proposed the Vote of Thanks.
