Strengthening Energy Security and Sustainability

The completion of this bidding process ensures a steady and reliable supply of clean energy for the vast railway network. Unlike intermittent solar or wind power, RTC renewable energy provides a consistent power flow, which is crucial for the heavy operational demands of the Indian Railways. By securing 1 GW of capacity, REMC Ltd is directly strengthening India’s energy security while drastically reducing the carbon footprint of the national transporter.

Aligned with National "Panchamrit" Goals

This achievement is deeply rooted in the "Panchamrit" commitments made by India at the COP26 summit. By prioritizing renewable energy over fossil fuels, the Ministry of Railways is leading the way in fulfilling the nation’s pledge to increase non-fossil energy capacity and reduce the carbon intensity of the economy. The project serves as a practical application of the decarbonization roadmap, moving India closer to its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.

Advancing Toward Net Zero 2030

The successful bid completion marks a critical milestone for the Net Zero 2030 mission. Indian Railways aims to be the world’s first major railway system to reach net-zero carbon emissions. This 1 GW RTC power procurement will significantly displace coal-based electricity consumption, preventing millions of tons of $CO_2$ emissions annually.
