NEW DELHI: RITES Limited, the leading transport infrastructure consultancy, has successfully commissioned the Dalmia–Salanpur railway siding for Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), a key subsidiary of Coal India. This critical infrastructure milestone is set to drastically enhance the evacuation and dispatch capabilities of ECL’s Salanpur Area.

The new siding enables ECL to dispatch up to 6 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of coal, ensuring a smoother supply chain for power plants and industrial consumers across the country.

Project Scope & Technical Specifications

The project involved complex engineering and multi-disciplinary works to integrate the mine’s dispatch system with the national railway network.

  • Track Infrastructure: The project encompasses a 2.25 TKM (Track Kilometer) route length and a total of 4.60 TKM of track laying, including the Dalmia In-Plant Yard.

  • Civil Engineering: Significant structural work was completed, including:

    • Road Over Bridge (ROB): Ensuring seamless road connectivity over the rail lines.

    • Minor Bridges & Vehicular Underpasses: Facilitating local movement and drainage.

  • Electrical & Signaling: The commissioning included high-tension Overhead Equipment (OHE) installation and state-of-the-art Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at Salanpur station and the in-plant yard to ensure safe and efficient rake movements.

Impact on Energy Security

By transitioning coal transport from road to rail through this dedicated siding, the project supports India's First Mile Connectivity (FMC) initiative. This not only reduces the carbon footprint associated with truck transport but also lowers logistics costs and minimizes environmental pollution in the mining periphery.
