Sikkim to get new Railway Line, Ministry approves Final Location survey

Sikkim: The Ministry of Railways has recently announced the approval of Final Location Survey (FLS) for a new railway line in the state of Sikkim, which would run from Melli to Dentam via Jorethang and Legship. This will surely be a significant step for the railway system of Sikkim, particularly in the west and south.

The survey will be executed by Northeast Frontier Railway and would cost around Rs 2.25 crore. This proposed line is expected to bring a major development through the infrastructure gap by linking remote communities like Dentam, which is near the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, to the national railway network.

Currently, being built and soon to be operational by 2027, this new line will strategically extend the Sivok-Rangpo railway line. Melli, a significant entry point to both southern and western Sikkim, is expected to serve as a hub for this extension and will ensure the region to be smoothly incorporated into the national railway transport system.

This new connectivity project is anticipated to stimulate economic growth in the region, especially in Gyalshing and the surrounding areas. Better access is expected to promote tourism, boost trade, and create employment opportunities, all of which will contribute to Sikkim's overall development. In the meantime, the work tender pertaining to the survey's execution will be announced soon.
