The announcement was made by Union Minister Anurag Thakur on October 4, 2023, after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the decision. The PMUY scheme was launched in 2016 to provide free LPG connections to poor households, especially those living in rural areas.
