Rs 200 crore plan for airport revamp.
BHUBANESWAR: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will invest Rs 200 cr to make the Biju Patnaik International Airport here commercially viable by 2019. "The money will be used for making a parallel taxiway, expanding the runway and constructing a new air traffic control tower.
Besides, there will be a commercial hub covering 60 acres in the airport area," AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said after his visit to the airport on Tuesday. "More than 1.5 million passengers use the airport every year. The airport certainly has potential to grow further," he added.
One of the major objectives of the project is to make the airport capable of recovering the money spent on its operation. "The operational cost of the airport has consistently risen because of the increase in the number of flights. Additional facilities have been created for the benefit of passengers and security arrangement," an airport official said.
