In a major milestone for India's technology ecosystem, Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries, has entered the top 20 of the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings for 2025, becoming the only Indian technology company to achieve the feat.

The company registered a remarkable jump of 320 places, making it one of the fastest-growing innovators globally and joining an exclusive league of technology giants including Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft.

 

Jio Among World's Leading Technology Innovators

The latest WIPO rankings are based on published Patent Cooperation Treaty applications and serve as a key benchmark for measuring global innovation and intellectual property strength.

Jio's rise comes at a time when worldwide PCT filings grew by less than one percent, underscoring the company's accelerating pace of research and development.

Strong Focus on Next-Generation Technologies

Jio Platforms' patent portfolio is concentrated around emerging digital technologies, including:

More Than 6,800 Patents Filed Globally

As of March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms has filed 6,817 patents worldwide, including:

  • 2,393 patents in India

  • 4,424 patents across international markets

The company has already secured 1,009 patent grants globally, comprising:

  • 538 patents granted in India

  • 471 patents granted overseas

 

A Shift from Technology Consumption to Creation

Jio Platforms stated that its innovation strategy is closely linked to technologies and platforms that have already been commercialized at scale.

The company's growing intellectual property portfolio signals a broader transformation in India's technology landscape—from being a large-scale adopter of global technologies to becoming a leading creator of original innovations.
