bp Signs MoU to Expand Natural Gas Exploration in Egypt’s West Nile Delta
bp signs agreement with Egypt to explore natural gas in the Mediterranean Sea. Drilling begins in 2026 to boost local energy supply.

bp has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore for natural gas in the Mediterranean Sea. This move aims to increase production from Egypt's national gas reserves. The agreement includes a program to drill five wells in water depths ranging from 300 to 1,500 meters.
The project is meant to speed up development. It will connect to existing production facilities in the West Nile Delta, helping to bring new gas to the local market quickly. Drilling is set to begin in 2026, with opportunities for further development based on the results

The MoU was signed at bp’s London headquarters during a visit by a high-level Egyptian delegation, including H.E. Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The signing strengthens the long-term partnership between bp and the Egyptian government.
Nader Zaki, bp’s regional president for the Middle East and North Africa, said that this agreement is a strategic step in the company's investments in Egypt. It focuses on developing additional gas resources in the West Nile Delta.
This new program is part of bp’s broader strategy to increase global production to 2.3-2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent a day by 2030, with the capacity to grow through 2035. The company recently celebrated 10 successful exploration discoveries in the first half of 2025, including two in Egypt's West Nile Delta. bp has been a key operator in Egypt for over 60 years.
