MCL’s new CSR project for rural development
New Delhi: Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. has taken up backyard poultry farming as one of its new CSR activities for improvement of "Livelihood and Quality of Life for Rural Development" and income generation for people living in and around its mines, in partnership with BAIF Foundation in Odisha.
Under this scheme, 126 households have taken up backyard poultry farming of the Kadaknath chicken breed in 40 villages in four clusters located in Jujomura block in Sambalpur District, Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda District, Lephripada in Sundargarh District, and Chendipada in Angul District of Odisha.
Backyard poultry farming is popular with landless or marginal landholding families. Under this poultry development project, the deliverables include the construction of poultry houses and support for the rearing of chicks, vaccination, health & feed. 150 poultry houses have been built under this project. The participating households generate income by selling eggs and meat.
The Kadaknath breed of chicken is popular for its black meat quality, texture, and taste. The demand for Kadaknath chicken is growing every day due to its excellent medicinal value. Kadaknath chickens are best suited for back yard farming rather than for rearing on a commercial scale.
