Aviation min pulls up AAI over delays in night landing at Juhu
NEW DELHI .Meeting convened by union minister Jayant Sinha puts the long-overdue plan back on the airport operator’s priority list.
In a major boost for Juhu aerodrome’s operations, the government has fast-tracked plans to equip the airport with night landing facilities after the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) got civil aviation minister Jayant Sinha to intervene in the matter.
According to sources, the minister gave a definitive push for the plan in a meeting he convened with officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and ONGC in attendance, on Tuesday. This was followed by a second meeting between officials of the ONGC, AAI and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), on Wednesday giving further push to Juhu’s operational capability.
“A survey has been ordered and it will be completed in a week’s time. Since the area is prone to water-logging, the height of the runway has to be increased before we install the lights. There were delays in implementation on the part of AAI but we have taken the matter on priority basis now. The whole process should be finished within a few months,” said an AAI official.
