India Achieves 520 GW Power Capacity, Sets Sights on AI and EV-Driven Growth
New Delhi, March 2026: India’s power sector has achieved remarkable milestones, emerging as one of the fastest-growing electricity markets in the world, as highlighted at the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026.
The country’s installed electricity generation capacity has now crossed 520 GW, driven by a combination of conventional power sources and a rapid expansion in renewable energy. The national transmission network has expanded to over 5 lakh circuit kilometres, ensuring robust connectivity and reliable supply across states and regions.
Renewable energy, particularly solar, has seen exponential growth. In just over a decade, solar capacity has increased from 2.8 GW in 2014 to more than 143 GW today, reflecting India’s commitment to clean energy transition and sustainability. This growth is a testament to policy support, technological advancements, and private sector participation.
Looking ahead, India anticipates electricity demand to rise by over 30% by 2030. This surge will be driven by emerging sectors such as AI-enabled data centres, electric mobility, and next-generation manufacturing facilities, all of which require reliable and scalable energy infrastructure.
Officials at the summit emphasized that the focus is not only on increasing capacity but also on modernizing the grid, integrating renewable energy seamlessly, and deploying smart technologies for efficiency and resilience. India’s efforts aim to balance economic growth with sustainability, ensuring a cleaner, smarter, and more reliable power system for the future.
The Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 underscored that India is not just meeting current energy needs but strategically preparing for a future where digital transformation, AI, and electrification reshape power consumption patterns. With these initiatives, India is positioning itself as a global leader in energy innovation and infrastructure development.
