India has expressed its readiness to play a larger global role in artificial intelligence-driven climate action, underlining the importance of international cooperation and responsible use of technology to address climate challenges.
Addressing the Technology and Innovation Conclave 2.0, jointly organised by the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology of the United Nations ESCAP and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India, senior government representatives said climate change is a global challenge that cannot be addressed by any single nation in isolation.
The government emphasised that global cooperation is imperative, noting that climate issues are too serious to be left to individual national efforts. Collaboration across countries, institutions and industries was highlighted as essential for building effective climate solutions.
Speaking on the role of artificial intelligence, the address stressed that AI must be deployed alongside human judgement to enhance resilience against extreme weather events. The focus, it was noted, should be on using AI as a decision-support tool rather than a standalone solution, ensuring that technological advances translate into real-world climate resilience.
Referring to the conclave’s theme, “AI for Climate Action and Resilience”, the government stated that India is well positioned to take on a larger leadership role in AI-enabled climate initiatives at the global level. The country’s growing digital ecosystem, research capabilities and innovation framework were cited as key strengths.
The address further highlighted India’s continued efforts to integrate innovation, academic research, technology transfer and industry within a single collaborative framework. Such integration, the government said, is essential to achieving shared global objectives related to climate protection and environmental sustainability.
These efforts align with the vision repeatedly articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which calls for technology-led, inclusive and cooperative approaches to address climate change while balancing development and environmental responsibility.
The Technology and Innovation Conclave 2.0 brought together policymakers, researchers, industry leaders and international organisations to explore how emerging technologies, particularly AI, can be leveraged to strengthen climate action and resilience across the Asia-Pacific region.
