SAIL-BHILAI Exports Large Volumes Of Special Quality Plates To UAE

NEW DELHI- SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant’s Plate Mill has been producing & supplying special quality plates in various grades ranging from Ship-building grade including plates for Indian Navy’s warships, Boiler & High-Tensile grades for different applications including structural constructions such as bridges & flyovers, manufacture of earth moving equipment etc, both for indigenous customers as well as for export to traders & customers abroad.

South West Asia is a prolific market for plates and TMT bars due to presence of traders as well as various large-scale construction activities in the region. Since there are no facilities for production of plates in the region, there is demand to import material from nearby Asian countries.

Steel producing countries China, South Korea, Ukraine, Russia are tough competitors for India when it comes to meeting the demand for plates in South West Asia. Competing against China and South Korea that are prominent suppliers in present global scenario, SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant has forayed into the export market once again in the current fiscal year by bagging orders from UAE for supplying large volumes of plates, with the help of TATA International as trader. The requirement is for high strength (High tensile) plates conforming to both European and American quality standards.

While around 18,000 tonnes of special quality high-tensile plates have already been exported by SAIL-BSP to various international customers in current fiscal year 2022-23 with dual-certification as per European & American specifications, fresh export orders from UAE are being executed. Besides ensuring desired surface quality and proper marking on the plates for identification, one important factor that has been taken into account while executing export orders is conforming to delivery schedules strictly, as this is linked to availability of vessel and its time at the port.

Exports of plates by SAIL-BSP to Middle-east countries including Dubai in UAE in current fiscal year include around 14,000 Tonnes supplied in August 2022 with different grades dual-certified to European & American specifications. The steel for these export grades has been made for the first time in SAIL-BSP with the addition of Boron in restricted quantity & Titanium, in compliance with National Export Tax norms.

Export order for additional volume of around 10,000 Tonnes of plates is currently being executed in Feb 2023. Plates of Mild & High-tensile grades complying to the European & American specifications are being supplied to M/s Tata International, Dubai. Supply of additional export order of 10000 Tonnes that is in the process of production shall be completed within March 2023 with plates complying to European & American specifications.

It is worth mentioning that dual certification in the Grades BS 10025 JR-AR and A 572 Gr.50 Type 3 has been done for the first time in Bhilai’s Plate Mill. Step by step monitoring under guidance of Director I/c Shri Anirban Dasgupta, ED (Works) Shri Anjani Kumar and perseverance of Plate Mill team led by CGM (Plate Mill) Shri R K Bisare along with support from Plant’s Quality Dept has resulted in successful and timely execution of the export orders.
