Prime Minister Modi to Host German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad on 12 January 2026

Ahmedabad, January 09, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet the Federal Chancellor of Germany, H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, on 12 January in Ahmedabad during Chancellor Merz’s first official visit to India. The visit, scheduled for 12-13 January, is at the invitation of the Prime Minister and marks a significant milestone in India-Germany relations.

The leaders’ itinerary begins at around 9:30 AM with a visit to the historic Sabarmati Ashram, followed by participation in the International Kite Festival at the Sabarmati Riverfront at 10 AM. Bilateral engagements will take place from 11:15 AM onwards at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

During the meetings, Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz will review the progress of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Discussions will focus on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, technology, education, skilling, mobility, and defence and security. The leaders will also explore collaboration in science, innovation, research, green development, and people-to-people exchanges.

In addition to government-level discussions, both leaders are expected to interact with business and industry leaders from India and Germany, further strengthening economic and strategic ties. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Chancellor Merz’s visit underscores the strong and evolving partnership between India and Germany, reinforcing shared commitments to sustainable development, innovation, and international cooperation.
