Engineers India Ltd declares Successful Mechanical Completion of Bio Refinery Project in Assam

New Delhi: In an unparalleled significance, the State owned Engineers India Limited (EIL) has announced the successful Mechanical Completion of the prestigious Bio Refinery Project of Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) in Numaligarh, Assam.

The project has been aimed at producing 49,000 TPA of Bio Ethanol, 11,000 TPA of Acetic Acid, and 19,000 TPA of Furfural from raw bamboo feedstocks, and is being executed by EIL in EPCM mode directly from the demo stage based on the technology supplied by Chempolis OY.

The achievement has been marked as a pioneering milestone by EIL in its six-decade journey of providing services and building the nation’s energy infrastructure. This project is anticipated to set the benchmark for India’s Bio-refinery programmes in the coming years.

PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the plant on September 14, during his visit to Assam. The project based in Numaligarh is developed by the joint venture company - Assam Bio Ethanol Pvt Ltd (ABEPL), promoted by NRL, and will be able to process 3,00,000 tons of bamboo per annum to produce around 50,000 tons of fuel-grade ethanol, besides co-products like furfural, acetic acid, bio-coal and green energy.

It will not only boost the supply of ethanol for the transportation segment but also open more opportunities for the deployment of technologies related to the production of value-added products and chemicals from by-products of the Bio-refinery.

Recently, the Engineering PSU firm has delivered India’s first and largest underground LPG rock cavern with a storage capacity of 80,000 MT for HPCL in Mangalore, marking a significant step in building the nation’s energy infrastructure.

As EPCM Consultant, EIL managed engineering, construction supervision, and commissioning support, ensuring safety, quality, and timelines, resulting in the successful ‘gas-in’ recently.

This first-of-its-kind facility, excavated beneath existing plant facilities, optimises land use and sets a new benchmark for future projects, significantly strengthening India’s LPG storage capacity and ensuring the country's energy security.
